Notice: TUMIQUI exhibits at Japan Fair, an official side event of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9)
7 years in Senegal and the outlook for a global business from Africa
TUMIQUI will exhibit at Japan Fair, an official side event of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The event takes place at Pacifico Yokohama from Wednesday 20 to Friday 22 August 2025.
The team set up a base in Senegal in 2017, 7 years ago. Since then, it has worked on the issues of areas that electricity and telecommunications rarely reach. Together with local members, it has used solar power and communication technology to address social issues and build industry in health, education and agriculture.
Power for small health posts. A digital environment for children’s learning. A supply chain that turns harvested produce into valuable products. This steady work on the ground is now becoming the basis of a business that reaches from Africa to the world.
At TICAD 9, the team will present its results to date and 3 business areas that it is developing with its co-creation partners.

The 3 business areas
The business rests on 3 pillars. They support the basis of people’s daily lives, develop local potential and connect with the world.
1. TUMIQUI Smart | Reliable power for health and education
Portable solar power units supply stable power to the places closest to people’s daily lives. They raise the quality of health care and widen access to education. This is where the business started.
- Education: installed in 20 primary schools to set up a digital learning environment. The pass rate for the end-of-primary examination rose from 31% to 77%.
- Health: 10 health posts electrified. This supports safe health services such as emergency deliveries at night and proper cold storage of vaccines.
- International recognition: in 2024, the units were officially adopted for the border management facilities of the UN agency IOM (International Organization for Migration) in The Gambia. They were chosen for their reliability and mobility.
2. TUMIQUI Module | A new generation of industrial infrastructure for local communities
A modular container that combines solar power, refrigeration, telecommunications and a KIOSK (small shop). It is a new form of infrastructure that turns scattered rural villages into places that create value.
- Closing the information gap: in 2022, the first fully off-grid data centre in Senegal was installed. It serves as a local information hub.
- Food security: in 2025, a pilot of a solar-powered cold store started with 4 major Japanese companies. It addresses the long-standing problem of food loss after harvest.
- Industrial base: full-scale sales (B2G, B2B) are planned from FY2026. The aim is to change how agricultural produce is collected and distributed.
3. TUMIQUI Délice | Processing Africa’s produce and bringing its value to the world
High-quality mangoes grown under the Senegalese sun are processed into puree, creating local jobs. The aim is to bring the value of Senegal’s agricultural produce to people around the world.
- Co-creation: desserts that bring out the qualities of Senegalese mango were developed with Okipota in Okinawa. The cross-border partnership created new value.
- Global markets: sample exports to Japan and France have started. A full-scale product launch is planned from FY2026.
- At TICAD 9: visitors can taste prototypes of these jointly developed desserts at the venue.

The future is built together, not waited for
The booth is a place for co-creation and exchange, to experience Africa today and to discuss what comes next. On the day, visitors can taste Senegalese mango desserts. The 3 Senegalese staff members who lead the business will come to Japan to welcome visitors. Visitors are welcome to stop by and see how close Japan and Senegal can be.
The team hopes that meetings at TICAD 9 will start new co-creation with international organisations, governments, companies and investors.
The whole team looks forward to meeting you at the venue.
