SUCRECUBE Japon (1-2 Nibancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) brings electricity and telecommunications to unelectrified villages in Africa. The Company has received the Special Prize at the 5th Japan SDGs Award. The Special Prize is given to companies and organisations recognised for notable achievements.

The Company’s business delivers electricity and telecommunications to unelectrified villages in Africa. Its guiding principle is “the sustainable development of Africa”. The award recognises that combining electricity and telecommunications, both essential today, creates key infrastructure for health, education and agriculture.

The Company received the certificate and the trophy at the award ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday 24 December.

1. About the Japan SDGs Award

The award was established by decision of the 3rd meeting of the SDGs Promotion Headquarters in June 2017. Its purpose is to encourage companies and organisations to work towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to promote an all-Japan effort. The SDGs Promotion Headquarters honours companies and organisations whose initiatives contribute to the SDGs. The winners are decided on the advice of a selection committee. The committee is made up of members of the SDGs Promotion Round Table, which brings together NGOs and NPOs, experts, the private sector, international organisations and other stakeholders.

2. Comment from Koichi SATO, CEO

“For three and a half years, we have worked hard on the TUMIQUI business in Senegal. I am very happy that this work has received an award from the Government of Japan and has gained recognition in Japan as well.

In Africa, the 17 SDGs should be understood as a means, not as the goal. I believe the real goal is the self-reliant development of Africa. We will continue as a partner that works closely with local people and grows together with them.”
